David Letterman said it Tuesday evening and not since Marion Cotillard immersed herself in the character of Edith Piaf have I seen an actress perform in a role where she transcended and became the character she portrayed.
Granted Natalie Portman is no Marion Cotillard and even Marion hasn’t been able to replicate her stellar performance as Edith Piaf the artist who was consumed by her excesses.
But Natalie did immerse herself in the role of Nina, Sure it didn’t hurt that she studied dance for 9 years, or even took Ballet for a year prior to filming Black Swan. She did a lot of her own dancing:
A major improvement over Jennifer Beals in Flash Dance, heck Jennifer didn’t do any of the dancing (Marine Jahan was the dancer). Beals didn‘t even ride the bicycle in Flash Dance. So why do lesbians love her so much?
