The BAFTA is considered to be a precursor to winning the Academy Award. Marion Cotillard won one prior to her Oscar acceptance for La Vie En Rose.

Portman is also the front-runner for the Oscar. The top British film awards and the Oscars have been aligning fairly closely in recent years.
She was in competition with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore, who costarred in "The Kids Are All Right," Noomi Rapace for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and Hailee Steinfeld for "True Grit."

There is virtually no way any other actress in going to win the best  actress award this year, as Portman’s performance has let to a virtual clean sweep of acting awards.

If Annette Bening provides an upset by winning the best actress Oscar, then it’s because of her age.  Portman is still young even though the two have been actually almost the same amount of time. Bening 21 years Portman 18 years.
