Meet Whitney Houston’s Rumored Lesbian Love, Robyn Crawford

UPDATE : There’s MORE:

According to writer Darryl Deino:
Between 1989 and 1991, Whitney had another friend people were talking about – image Kelly McGillis. They were often seen going out for dinner. While Kelly McGillis was filming The Babe with John Goodman during the Summer of 1991 in Chicago, she and Whitney were spotted at Carson’s Ribs as well as Uno’s Pizzeria. While Kelly was staying at the Ritz Carlton, Whitney would often walk in wearing a baseball cap with sunglasses, then head towards Kelly’s suite. Kelly McGillis has since come out of the closet as a lesbian.  Um Hello!

The reason that I’ve kept this post up so long is because too many lives are being ruined as a result of Homophobia either directly or indirectly. Students are committing suicide after being outed, or politicians are having political scandals because they are caught in the mens room with a male prostitute [after sponsoring anti-gay legislature] or for a number of other reasons.

I am secure in my identity but this sends a dangerous message to youth, particularly African American and Latino or other socially marginalized LGTBQ youth, particularly those living in communities where high levels of religiosity is present.

There is NOTHING: Wrong, shameful or perverted about a woman loving another person whether of the same sex or opposite sex. The truth is that Humans [males] constructed a set of rules that are engendered to benefit them. These same  then they say that these rules come from an unseen source:  A “God” if you will [Now it happening in the Woman's Right To Choose/Birth Control debacle]. So while I am not adverse to accepting that unexplainable phenomena occurs I refuse to accept another human being telling me that they are an Earth Bound emissary of an Astral Deity. Bottom line is that many humans are foolish.

For all of my complaints that Queen Latifah won’t come out of the closet, at least she is still alive and happy with her girlfriend.

Houston and I were close in age. I remember when the news broke and I saw the photos of them together. It was NO rumor. In no time Houston was shoved i into the arms of Bobby Brown. It was absolutely ridiculous and I will forever blame the homophobic segment of the African American Community for pushing Whitney into the arms of an abusive druggie, instead of letting her be Happy.
People often say that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover: Maybe they never heard of “Gaydar” I mean LOOK at Robyn. And doesn’t Bobby looked like he’s been roped into a marriage of convenience? Damn Bobby can’t even FAKE a smile

Hugs: Whitney, left with Bobby Brown, mother Cissy and Robyn Crawford
Hugs: Whitney, (left) with Bobby Brown, mother Cissy and (right) Robyn Crawford who many believe to be her one true love.
Before you could scream: “Dyke In A Dress,” Whitney was partnered with Bobby Brown. However the romance was so quick it almost seemed forced to appease the Homophobic and seemingly intolerant African American Community.  Maybe if Whitney had just been left alone she wouldn’t have hooked up with that druggie and that metaphorical “On Button” of addiction that Bobby Brown pushed would have been left dormant. It certainly does seem that after her marriage to Bobby Brown, Whitney’s life started going downhill. Previously wholesome and clean-living, she went on drink-and-drug binges – evidence of a troubled personal life and  much unhappiness. It seems likely that the split with Robyn contributed to her substance abuse and decline.
Yes Ultimately Whitney was responsible for the course her life took and drinking, smoking and drugs certainly will take its toll on one’s health, but still unless you are in a very supportive environment {like Houston had with Robyn} it is easy to succumb to temptation.
Most of the common theories surrounding Whitney Houston's descent into drugs and eventual death have to do with the influence of her husband Bobby Brown. Now there's a new interesting theory. Maybe it wasn't her marriage to Bobby that turned her into an addict but breaking up with her lesbian lover\, Robyn Crawford with whom Whitney once shared an apartment! Yes they even LIVED together. So the African American publicity machine needs to cut the Bobby Brown was Whitney's "One True Love" Bullshit.

While everyone has been talking about Whitney's private life in the past week, gay activist Peter Tatchell is first to say point blank that Whitney had a long-term relationship with her best friend and former assistant Robyn Crawford. Tatchell's theory is that Houston had to break up with Crawford and marry Bobby Brown to quash the lesbian rumors [Which is EXACTLY what I thought at the time considering that the marriage announcement came out of the blue, I mean NO romance just BOOM: We’re getting married!], and it was the heartbreak from dumping her "one true love" that turned her into an addict, not Brown's negative influence.

This theory seems to dovetail nicely with the decades of rumors that Houston was, in fact, a lesbian (which Tricia Romano faithfully documented after Whitney passed).

Crawford met Houston when they were 16 at a summer job in East Orange, New Jersey, and they soon became inseparable. Robyn was the Gayle King to Whitney's Oprah; whether or not the relationship was a platonic one is uncertain, but they had the closest of friendships. Crawford worked for many years as Houston's assistant, an experience she talked about right after Whitney's death. Crawford says this is the first time she talked about her relationship with Whitney, but she only discusses their professional entanglements, not the personal ones.

However, Whitney's obituary includes this cryptic passage:
When people left her or were told to leave, they could never believe that Whitney would never call them - but she never did. She was working hard to keep herself together, and I think she felt that if she admitted any feeling of sadness or weakness she would crumble.
That certainly sounds like Crawford knows more about Whitney than she's willing to say publicly, so until she writes a tell-all or shows up on 20/20, we're going to have to keep guessing.
